The New Miami Snowbird: Luxury Winter Rentals in South Florida

A new generation of entrepreneurs, executives and professionals is discovering a different way to spend the winter.

For decades, winter in South Florida was associated with the traditional “snowbird” — retirees escaping the cold in New York, New Jersey, Canada and other northern markets.

After approximately ten years working in South Florida luxury real estate, development and vacation rentals, I have watched that profile change.

The traditional snowbird is still here, but today I increasingly see entrepreneurs, business owners, corporate executives and professionals looking to spend three to six months in South Florida.

Technology and remote work have made this possible. If you can manage your business or career from almost anywhere, why not spend January, February and March enjoying some of the best weather South Florida has to offer?

Not a Vacation — a Winter Home

These clients aren't necessarily looking for a vacation rental. They want a temporary home where they can work, entertain, exercise and continue their normal lives.

There may be thousands of rentals in South Florida, but once you require luxury, fully furnished, a desirable location, 3–6 month availability and professional service, the selection becomes much smaller.

A client may want the urban lifestyle of Brickell, direct beach access in Bal Harbour, a waterfront mansion in Miami Beach, or a private home with dockage in Fort Lauderdale. Each requires a very different search.

South Florida offers very different winter lifestyles, from oceanfront residences to private waterfront estates.

What Ten Years in Luxury Rentals Has Taught Me

One of the most important things I have learned is that finding a beautiful property is only half of the job.

Someone paying a significant amount to live in a multimillion-dollar residence expects service. If there is an issue with the A/C, internet, pool, appliances or building, somebody needs to answer the phone and solve it.

My experience as a Realtor, developer, investor and vacation-rental manager has allowed me to understand both sides: protecting the owner's property while making sure the tenant is properly taken care of.

A New Generation Is Discovering South Florida

This change is happening as Miami continues to attract enormous numbers of visitors, professionals and businesses.

Greater Miami and Miami Beach welcomed a record 28.3 million visitors in 2025, generating approximately $22.7 billion in visitor spending, according to the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Not all of these people are seasonal renters, of course. But the numbers reinforce something I have observed personally: South Florida is no longer attracting only vacationers and retirees. More people are asking themselves whether they could actually live here for part of the year.

Try South Florida Before You Buy It

There is another advantage to spending three to six months here: you get to experience South Florida before deciding whether to buy.

A weekend doesn't tell you enough. Living here for several months lets you discover whether your lifestyle fits Brickell, Bal Harbour, Miami Beach, Fort Lauderdale or another South Florida community.

For clients considering a future second home or relocation, a seasonal rental can effectively become a test drive.

Winter 2026–2027

During my years in this business, I have seen busy winter seasons and slower ones. No two years are identical.

But with Miami coming off record tourism numbers and continuing to attract professionals and businesses, the 2026–2027 winter season deserves early planning.

The challenge isn't finding a rental. It is finding the right fully furnished luxury property, available for exactly the months you need, with someone who knows how to take care of you while you are here.
